The culture of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) can be traced to ancient Egyptian times. Several species of tilapia are cultured commercially, but Nile tilapia is the predominant cultured species worldwide. Tilapia culture in South America started on a small scale in the early 1970s. The first record of tilapia production in the region was reported in Colombia in 1971 with only 1 Mt on Nile Tilapia.
